Melissa Greener: 2.24.17
It's such a happy accident when the artists I'm haphazardly stalking suddenly request a show like I'm doing them a favor. Such was the case with Nashville-based Americana artist Melissa Greener, an electric-guitar-slinging singer and songwriter who caught my eye because of her collaboration with Folk All Y'all artists David Wilcox and Rebecca Loebe, as well as her songwriting partnership with the immortal Guy Clark. Her work is influenced by standard torch balladeers, the Laurel Canyon and Greenwich Village songwriter scenes of the 1960's and 70's, David Rodriguez, Townes Van Zandt, and Lucinda Williams, but her distinctive sound springs from a love of modernist poetry, Bohemia, and the modal D tuning on her guitar. I generally use these preview posts to give you my reasons for hosting an artist and almost totally ignore the "official bio" provided by the musicians, but I'm not sure I could come up with anything more compelling than Melissa's own story: A natural horsewoman from the age of two, Greener has ridden all of her life and identified with the sensitivity and mystical spirit of the animal. She has also trekked mountain ranges in the Alps, Slovakia and Tibet. She's pedaled a bicycle solo across Canada, and lived in a rural village in China. “I once sailed so far into the Mediterranean Sea I couldn't see land, and have seen so many stars in an Egyptian desert I couldn't see the sky.” Her current adventure is a full-time international touring schedule.
