Gillian Grassie: 11.19.16

At the risk of sounding creepy, as well as contradicting my long-standing stance against fate, I sort of feel like Gillian Grassie was just meant to play Folk All Y'all. I was semi-listening to the office Pandora station when I was struck by a voice and composition that stopped me in my tracks typing. I looked up the artist and learned that she's an incredibly talented singer-songwriter who splits her time between the east coast of the U.S. and Germany. Oh and she plays the harp. The what? Yeah. Not the mouth harp, or those cute little Ren Faire lyre things. A big ol' harp. And it's so gorgeous, y'all. Why haven't folkies been playing the harp this whole time? I mean, other than the difficulty of fitting one into a 1989 Ford Tempo. I can't even imagine the complications involved in international travel, but luckily for us, she's willing to take them on. Since scheduling Gillian to play for us (which I did minutes after hearing her that first time), I keep seeing all these little signs that she's our people - the fact that she shares a producer with our friends Freddy & Francine, that book on her Instagram written by my new favorite Twitterer, the testimonial from Marc Cohn, her TEDx talk, her Barry Manilow cover. With influences ranging from Samuel Coleridge to Joni Mitchell to Bjork, her work and performances are complex, joyful, and an English major's dream.
