Charley Crockett: 9.13.17

Hot dog, y'all! Hot! DOG! So there I was, minding my own business, checking the lineup for AmericanaFest the minute it was released and scoping out all the new names. I'll admit that Charley Crockett caught my attention for a number of reasons - his raw, unique sound; the shockingly appealing combo of brass and banjo; the mix of traditional and modern leanings that form a whole new structure; and also, okay, because my nine-year-old son was doing a presentation on Davy Crockett that week. It took about two minutes in the YouTube before I reached out to see if we could get a show put together while he's on his way to Nashville (and only partly because I wanted Memphis to have him first, at least on this run). And damned if it didn't work! Charley's (fascinating) bio describes him as a blues singer, but also points out that he's been compared to artists ranging from Bill Withers to Gary Clark Jr. to Merle Haggard.  As many (including our own Chris Herrington) have pointed out, Americana as a genre should fully represent the interwoven layers of truly American musical forms, and I can't think of a much more representative trio of men than that. As further evidence, Charley's latest album, dropping Sept. 8th, is an interpretation of country classics. I'd fully planned to take a show break in September because there's so much going on in Memphis, but when I heard Charley, I knew he had to be part of our most magical musical month of the year. CHARLEY SOUNDS GREAT! HOW DO I HEAR HIM? This show will be Wednesday, September 13th, with doors opening at 7:00 and music starting PROMPTLY at 7:30. This is a privately hosted event, so please register through Brown Paper Tickets or request a seat to confirm your spot and get address information. The suggested (minimum!) donation for this event is $20*, all of which will go directly to the artist.
