Aireene Espiritu: 9.13.18
One of the things that's so damn fun about Folk All Y'all is the chance to get acquainted with artists from all over the world who might not have otherwise crossed my path. As a Listening Room Network host, I hear from a whole bunch of talented musicians wanting to find an audience in Memphis, but sometimes I find someone I can't wait to see and go after them myself. I discovered Aireene Espiritu through LRN and immediately reached out to host her because her sound was truly unique and compelling. Packed into this powerhouse is a voice that encompasses country, blues, folk, gospel, bluegrass, and inspirations from Latin America, Africa, and her native Philippines - a mix she refers to simply as "stompin', swayin', and timeless Americana." Whether armed only with her ukulele or with a full band behind her, she takes audiences on a journey from heartbreak to hope. And here's what some other folks had to say ..."Folk singer-songwriter Aireene Espiritu works in the elemental substance of vernacular American music with an uncanny ease. Whether blues, hillbilly, soul, folk or R&B, the Philippine-born Espiritu ... demonstrates masterly command of each. Her original compositions mix deft lyrical construction and classic form just as impressively." - Jonny Whiteside, L.A. Times"In her voice, in the way Aireene Espiritu sings her original songs, she is at once a rare breed of artist, a soul singer, a folk troubadour, a blues artist, a busk show princess, a skiffle tear-stained street singer with a heart as big as the history of the music that drives her. And in the final analysis, she is a storyteller without borders or cultural limitations." - Terry Roland, No DepressionAIREENE SOUNDS GREAT!
